Are car manufacturers now building in obsolescence?

30 years ago we could overhaul an engine for what today it costs to replace a headlight, on some late model cars. More and more car designers seem to be designing for low cost of manufacture, at the expense of ease of servicing. Is it premeditated built in obsolescence? I don’t know yet!
